Istikhara Dua — Guidance for Every Decision

Istikhara is the Islamic prayer for asking Allah to guide you before a decision. You pray two rakah, then recite a specific dua asking Allah to make the right path easy and take the wrong one away from you. It is not about seeing a dream. It is about what actually happens next once you ask.
Results may vary within minutes to months, depending on the case and affordability.

What Does Istikhara Mean? (Dua Text, Transliteration and Translation)
Istikhara comes from the Arabic root khayr, meaning good. It means asking Allah to choose the good outcome for you, in a matter where you can’t be sure yourself.
The dua comes from an authentic hadith. Jabir ibn Abdullah narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this dua to his companions for every decision, the same way he taught them a surah from the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari 1166).
English translation: “O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You from Your immense bounty. You are able and I am not. You know and I do not. You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my life and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my life and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it. Decree for me what is good wherever it is, and make me content with it.”
You say “this matter” (hadhal-amr) while thinking of, or actually naming, your real situation. Marriage, a job offer, a house, whatever it is.
Do I Have to Say the Dua in Arabic?
The istikhara dua itself is best recited in Arabic, since that’s the exact wording taught in the hadith. Adding your own personal dua about the situation, in your own language, is completely fine and encouraged.
Short answer: recite the Arabic dua as taught, then add your own words in English or Urdu if you want to.
How to Pray Salat al-Istikhara (Step-by-Step Method)
The method is simple. Most people overthink it. Here is the actual sequence:
- Make wudu (ablution), the same as before any prayer.
- Set your intention (niyyah) for two rakah of nafl (voluntary) prayer, for your specific matter.
- Pray two rakah. In the first, recite Surah Al-Fatihah then Surah Al-Kafirun. In the second, recite Surah Al-Fatihah then Surah Al-Ikhlas. Some scholars say any surah works fine, this combination is simply the most commonly taught.
- After the salam, raise your hands and recite the istikhara dua above, naming your actual matter in place of “this matter.”
- Add your own dua in your own words about the same matter, if you want to.
- Go ahead with whatever you were already planning to do next. Watch how things unfold, and act on what you see.

In practice: most people I speak with skip step six. They pray istikhara once, then wait for a sign instead of taking the next real step, like actually calling the person or applying for the job. Istikhara is not a replacement for moving forward. It is guidance while you move forward.
Best Time to Pray Istikhara, and Can You Pray It After Fajr, Isha or Maghrib?
Istikhara can be prayed any time, except the three times any voluntary prayer is disliked: right after Fajr until the sun is fully up, right around sunset near Maghrib, and exactly at midday before Zuhr. Praying it after Isha is fine. Many people prefer the last third of the night, since dua is more likely accepted then, but this is a preference, not a requirement.
Short answer: any time is fine except right after Fajr, right around sunset, or exact midday. After Isha is fine.
How Many Times Can You Repeat Istikhara?
There is no hadith limiting istikhara to one time. Repeat it as many times as you need, on different days, until you feel enough clarity to move forward. Some scholars suggest around seven times when a decision feels especially unclear.
Istikhara Signs, Dreams and Results: Myth vs Reality
A lot of what people believe about istikhara signs is not actually in the Quran or hadith. Here is what is real and what is not.
| Myth | What’s Actually True |
|---|---|
| A dream after istikhara is the final answer | No authentic hadith ties dreams to Allah’s answer. A dream might just reflect your own hopes or fears. |
| Feeling happy about it means it’s a “yes” | You may already want the outcome. That feeling alone proves nothing. |
| There’s a fixed 3 or 7 day waiting period | No fixed timeframe exists. Some answers show up in days, others take months. |
| Colours in a dream mean something specific (green = good, red = bad) | This isn’t from any authentic Islamic source. Don’t build a decision on dream colours. |
| Once istikhara is done, the result can never change | It can. Circumstances change, and so can what’s genuinely good for you. |
The real sign, according to scholars, is how your circumstances unfold. If a path stays open and things fall into place with reasonable effort, take that as encouragement. If everything you try hits a wall, take that as your answer too, without forcing it.

In practice: the question I get most after “how do I do istikhara” is “I saw this in a dream, what does it mean.” My honest answer is usually the same. Look at what’s actually happening in your life, not just what you dreamt.

Istikhara for Marriage, Rishta and Choosing a Life Partner
Marriage istikhara is the single most searched use of istikhara worldwide. It makes sense. It’s one of the biggest decisions a person makes, and it usually involves other people’s feelings too.
The method is the same two-rakah prayer above. What’s different is how you interpret the result, and who else should be involved. Both people, and often both families, should be doing their own istikhara. It is not a decision one side makes alone.
Before You Do Istikhara for a Marriage Proposal
- Actually meet or speak with the person, and ask real questions about deen, character and life plans, before praying istikhara about them.
- Pray istikhara about the proposal itself, not about a person you’ve never properly assessed.
- Give it real time. A year is genuinely too long to sit on one proposal without deciding. Weeks, or a few months, is more realistic.
- Don’t let one uneasy dream cancel a proposal that’s otherwise going well for practical, deen-based reasons.
What If My Family Disagrees With My Istikhara Result?
This is common, and it doesn’t mean either side is wrong. Istikhara guides you personally. It doesn’t guide the people around you. Talk it through honestly instead of using “I did istikhara” to end the conversation.
In practice: most marriage istikhara questions I get aren’t really about the prayer. They’re about someone hoping istikhara removes the need for a hard conversation with their family. It won’t. It’s guidance for you, alongside those conversations, not instead of them.
Istikhara for Job, Business and Career Decisions
Career istikhara searches are smaller than marriage searches, but the questions are just as real: a new job offer, switching careers, starting a business, taking on a business partner.
The method doesn’t change. What changes is what you’re weighing. For career decisions, pay attention to practical signs too. Does the opportunity actually match your skills and values. Is the workplace somewhere you can see yourself. Does the business partner have a track record you can verify.
Should I Do Istikhara Before or After a Job Interview?
Either works. Most people pray it once the decision is real, meaning once they have an actual offer to accept or decline, not while still just wondering whether to apply. Praying istikhara over a decision that doesn’t exist yet won’t give you much to read.
In practice: business partnership istikhara comes up more than people expect, usually after money has already changed hands. Do this before you sign anything, not after.
Istikhara for Property, Divorce, Health, Travel and Other Big Decisions
The same method and the same “ease vs difficulty” principle above applies to every decision, including these:
- Property: buying, selling, or choosing between two houses. Watch how financing, paperwork and timing move, easily or with constant obstacles.
- Divorce and separation: one of the hardest matters to pray istikhara about, since it affects more than one life. A dedicated guide on istikhara for divorce, covering the extra sensitivity this needs, is planned.
- Health and surgery: istikhara is a spiritual addition to medical advice, not a replacement for it. Confirm with your doctor first, then pray istikhara about which option to take.
- Travel, visa and immigration: common among people considering a move abroad. Watch how the paperwork, sponsorship and approvals move.
- Court cases, investment and second marriage: each carries its own detailed considerations, with full guides planned. The same method and the same real sign, ease versus difficulty, applies to all of them.
Is Istikhara Real? Is It Halal, and Can Someone Else Do It for You?
Istikhara is real and authentic. It comes from Sahih al-Bukhari, one of the two most authenticated hadith collections in Islam. It is not haram. Scholars across all major schools of thought agree it is an established Sunnah.
Roman Urdu mein seedha jawab: Istikhara bilkul asli hai, Sahih Bukhari ki authentic hadees se sabit hai. Yeh koi jadu ya toona nahi, seedha Allah se dua hai.
Can Someone Else Do Istikhara for You?
Honest answer: not fully. Istikhara is a personal prayer between you and Allah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) never had someone else pray it on his behalf, and scholars are clear that paying someone to “do your istikhara for you” does not work the same way as praying it yourself.
What an online istikhara consultation can actually offer: help understanding the correct method, an honest outside opinion on reading your circumstances when you’re too emotionally involved to see clearly, and Quranic dua or wazifa support done alongside your own istikhara, not instead of it.
Doing Istikhara Fully Alone vs Getting Guided Support
Doing it entirely yourself
- Follows the Sunnah exactly as taught, at no cost, in complete privacy.
- Harder to judge your own circumstances objectively, especially under stress, with no one to talk the result through with.
Getting guided support
- A calmer outside perspective when you’re too close to the situation, in English, Urdu or Arabic.
- Still can’t replace praying istikhara yourself, and any service that won’t tell you its fees upfront is a warning sign, not a trust signal.
In practice: I tell every client the same thing before we start. I can guide you and pray alongside you. I can’t pray istikhara instead of you. Anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being honest with you.
Results may vary within minutes to months, depending on the case and affordability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it okay to do istikhara on behalf of someone else, like my child or sibling?
You can make a general dua for their guidance, but the istikhara prayer for a specific decision is meant for the person actually making that decision. Encourage them to pray it themselves once they are able to.
What if I feel nothing after istikhara, no dream and no clear feeling either way?
That is normal. Most people never get a dramatic sign. Keep moving forward with the decision and pay attention to how circumstances unfold over the following days and weeks.
Can I do istikhara while on my period?
You cannot pray the two rakah during that time, since it needs the same purity conditions as any prayer. You can still make sincere dua asking Allah for guidance, without the prayer itself, until you are able to pray it.
What is the difference between istikhara and just asking a scholar for advice?
Asking a scholar gives you a practical opinion based on their knowledge. Istikhara is a direct prayer asking Allah to guide your own heart and circumstances. Many people benefit from doing both.
Why does my istikhara feel different every time I pray it about the same matter?
Circumstances change, and so does your own certainty. It is normal for your sense of ease or unease to shift as new information comes in. That shift is itself part of the guidance.
Do I need an imam or a paid service for my istikhara to be valid?
No. Istikhara does not require anyone else to be present or involved. Anyone who claims their involvement is required for it to work is not describing the actual Islamic practice.
